Breaking the Glass Ceiling in STEM: A Challenge for European SMEs

The underrepresentation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields is a persistent issue across Europe. This gender gap not only limits opportunities for women but also hinders the competitiveness of businesses. The DEBUTING project, launched in March 2023, aims to tackle this challenge by promoting gender equality within SMEs through cluster development and by empowering SMEs to adopt more inclusive practices.

Research conducted in Hungary as part of the DEBUTING project highlights the complex factors contributing to the underrepresentation of women in STEM. These include societal stereotypes that discourage girls from pursuing STEM subjects, educational disparities, and workplace challenges such as limited career advancement opportunities and work-life balance issues. Women often face difficulties in balancing work and family life, limited career advancement opportunities, and a lack of female role models. These factors, coupled with the "glass ceiling" and "glass wall" effects, create significant obstacles for women aspiring to leadership positions in STEM.

To inform the project, research was conducted on the situation of women researchers in Hungary. The findings align with the broader European picture, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. These include financial incentives, enhanced training and career opportunities, and the implementation of family-friendly policies. Additionally, increasing women’s participation in decision-making roles and promoting a more inclusive workplace culture are crucial steps.

To address these challenges, the project emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment for women in STEM. This includes implementing family-friendly policies, providing adequate training and career development opportunities, and increasing the representation of women in decision-making roles. The DEBUTING project seeks to address these issues by promoting gender equality as a key driver of business competitiveness. By working with policy authorities and public actors from ten European regions, the project aims to develop regional and national policy instruments that support SMEs in adopting inclusive practices.

By fostering gender equality within SMEs, the DEBUTING project aims to create a more inclusive and innovative business landscape. By empowering women in STEM, Europe can harness the full potential of its talent pool and drive economic growth.

Ultimately, breaking the glass ceiling in STEM requires a concerted effort from governments, businesses, and educational institutions. By working together, we can create a future where women have equal opportunities to succeed in STEM fields. By breaking down barriers and creating a more level playing field, the DEBUTING project and similar initiatives can help to unleash the full potential of women in STEM, driving innovation and economic growth across Europe.
